The London Armoury was opened on Dundas St. in 1905 to much celebration. It was built after the former garrison in what is now Victoria Park, burned down. The armoury served as the headquarters for a number of militia units from every land branch in London: artillery, infantry, cavalry, engineers, and medical corps.
The inauguration of the armouries saw a crowd of 4000 spectators watch as the buglers of the 7th Fusiliers played. As a London regiment, the 1st Hussars were among the many who were based there. The armoury remained their home until it closed in 1977. A few years later it was turned into a luxury hotel. Following the closure, the regiments stationed there had to find new homes. For the 1st Hussars this meant moving to Wolseley Barracks, which remains their London Headquarters today.

SOMERVILLE INDUSTRIES PAPER-BOX COMPANY BUILDING
Here you see the Somerville Paper Box Co. in 1911. By this time, the business had undergone major change. In 1908, C. R. Somerville sold the business to a New York chewing gum manufacturer. Brothers J. K. (1867-1945) and D. H. (1865-1942) McDermid purchased the box-making side of the business from the American firm in 1910. They formed the O-Pee-Chee Gum Company in 1911.

Remember when there used to almost be a gas station on every corner? And remember when gas was under 40 cents a gallon?
This is a photo of a Sunoco gas station taken by one of friends mothers from the south side of Oxford East, looking toward hus grandfather's Sutter's Sunoco gas station at 944 Oxford St. East. The car parked in the picture was their family car.
The photo was taken sometime in the 1950's, likely the latter part of that decade. Gas was 37.9 cents a GALLON! They owned the station from 1952-1970, when my elderly friends father retired at age 71.
Gas stations were plentiful in that area, according to my friend .
a White Rose, gas station at the corner of Stuart and Oxford, a Fina corner station at Oxford and Boullee, my friends grandfather's corner station of Oxford and Barker and an Esso station at the corner of Oxford and Sterling.
My elderly friend says he has super terrific
Great memories from those days hanging around his gas station as a child!
The picture here is of the forum in Montreal a day after closing the forum as a hockey arena . Farewell forum
